Charity Auction 2008  The charity weekend was a great success and together with your help we raised over £5,000 to support the work of Act 4. The 1st of March was a busy day for Act 4 as we started the morning off with a brunch at the Potters Bar Baptist Church and concluded the day with an Auction and Dinner at Hadley Wood Golf Club.

Di Godin runs the London Marathon 2008: I started near the back and it took 15 minutes to find the start line. It was like an obstacle course jumping over all the bin liners and clothes the runners ahead had discarded. The whole route was noisy with crowds and runners who still had the energy to shout back when people shouted “Ogi Ogi Ogi.”

The marathon certainly did not prove to be the challenge I anticipated after the bone in my foot moved at 5 miles I stopped aiming for 5 hours and just enjoyed the day. I ran/walked but the time flew by and it did not seem so far. I chatted with fellow runners and heard lots of stories. Everyone had a reason to run the marathon and there was so much humanity and good will amongst strangers. The organisation was great. Spectators were all along the route cheering on everyone, calling out your name, and giving sweets and fruit to the runners. For me, seeing my family and friends at 23 miles was a moment I will never forget. I was still jogging when I heard my son Waz & husband Paul shout from the side. I’m told I had a grin from ear to ear.

By keeping the promise I made to my children from my hospital bed the previous year and completing the race may be why I did not have any difficult moments. I felt like I wanted to shed a tear when I realised I finished and kept that promise of running the marathon. One of my lasting memories will be the great mix of emotions I felt in such a short space of time. I wanted to be there, I was happy to be there, I had waited six years to get there and overcome difficult circumstances to complete the marathon. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

Sam Frankel completes 60 mile round circuit - 18 mile bike ride, 36 miles in a kayak and 6 miles running: I set off at 6.30am on the bike and reached our launch point quicker than expected to find none of the support team there. However, they did arrive with Terry, my brother, and a good friend so the four of us set off down the river. It was only Terry’s third time in a canoe but with plentiful provisions and the current heading in the right direction the 8 and a half hours passed relatively quickly and we all arrived safely in Shrewsbury. From there my brother and I headed off on our run and made our way through the countryside back to where I had started 12 hours earlier.

We had the weather on our side and we all enjoyed the day, although I think we were all feeling a little weary on Sunday!!
